Dental implants are considered by many to be the “gold standard” method for replacing missing teeth and here at All Saints Green Dental Clinic in Norwich, we definitely agree.
Whilst bridges and dentures are long-established methods for replacing gaps in your smile, the functionality and appearance offered by dental implants is some way ahead.
An implant is a small, precision engineered rod of metal, typically titanium, which is embedded into the jaw bone to form a very strong foundation for a support collar known as an ‘abutment’ and a dental crown. Together, these form the complete dental implant, a highly realistic and very strong replacement for a missing tooth.
All of the more complex dental treatments start with a detailed consultation and teeth implants are no different.
We will invite you to our convenient local clinic in Norwich where an assessment, including scans and X-rays, takes place. We use this sophisticated imaging to help us ensure that you are suitable for treatment and, if it goes ahead, to guide the accurate placement of your new implant.
On the day of treatment we invite you back to the clinic to have the implant placed. We use a powerful anaesthetic to ensure that any pain is minimised and then place the implant into a small hole we create in your jaw bone. The implant is then covered with gum and allowed to heal, a process called osseo-integration, which typically takes 3 – 6 months.
The jaw bone and implant fuse together to create a very firm foundation to support your new tooth – very similar to the root of your natural tooth and in many cases, actually stronger.
To complete the implant, we attach a custom-made crown which is very carefully matched to the rest of your natural teeth. You can now eat and smile again with confidence!
During the period where the implant fuses with the jaw bone, you will need to take extra care with what you eat so that the healing process is not interrupted and the implant is not damaged. We will advise all about this during your consultation with our experienced team.
Teeth implants have many benefits but one of the key ones is that they are far more convenient than dentures and bridges. You should only need to look after your new implant as you do your natural teeth, with regular brushing, flossing and periodic checks back with our team.
Dental implants are incredibly versatile and can be used to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth. Where numerous teeth have been lost, we can use four or more implants to support a full-arch of replacement teeth in a process sometimes called “all on 4” or “new smile in a day”.
Implants can also be used in a similar way to support dentures, keeping them firmly fixed in the correct position to help with eating and to avoid embarrassing slippage.
Are you suffering with gaps in your smile due to lost teeth or perhaps struggling with loose, uncomfortable dentures? This doesn’t have to be the case so why not call the team at All Saints Green Dental Centre to see how we can help?
